Before cybersecurity professionals can effectively defend a network, they must understand how the Internet works. In this lecture, you'll learn the fundamentals of Domain Name System (DNS) and the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)—two of the most important protocols encountered during network monitoring, packet analysis, incident response, and threat hunting.
We'll examine how DNS translates domain names into IP addresses, how HTTP enables communication between web browsers and servers, and how defenders analyze both protocols to identify phishing attacks, malware communications, malicious domains, data exfiltration, and other suspicious network activity.
Understanding normal DNS and HTTP traffic is one of the first steps toward recognizing malicious behavior inside enterprise environments.
